Welcome to LEAD 175, Living and Learning to Lead!

Hello Emerging Leaders!

I am so pleased and eager to work with you all in this course! My name is Calvin Joyner and I will be your instructor. Throughout our time, we will learn some of the most important essentials to being an effective leader. We will be using two particular texts: The Student Leadership Challenge: Five Practices for Exemplary Leaders (James M. Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner) and Habitudes (Dr. Tim Elmore). For our online class blog, we will read from Habitudes.

As student leaders, you will have the opportunity to engage in many topics that deal with leadership. Topics will include: Group Dynamics/Conflict Resolution, Goal Setting as a Leader, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Leadership, Non-Positional Leadership - Learning to Lead and Follow, and Personal Wellness and Self-Care in Leadership. It will be important for you all to pull from your previous knowledge, background, and experiences to deliver fully and wholeheartedly. This course is not meant to be rigorous. However, you will be challenged to think outside of the box and learn from your peers. Although we may have different perspectives on the various topics, it will be important for you all to (a) effectively listen, (b) think before you respond, and (c) refrain from engaging in harmful, hurtful dialogue. We share, we will grow, and we will learn!

Your first blog assignment has already been given out to you. Make sure you follow ALL directions. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to working with you all this semester!

Well Wishes,

Calvin Joyner
